Sun Spots

A Sporadic Publication for Solaridge Cluster

The weather has changed from Washington Summer to Late Summer. There was a Wood Mouse scurrying up and down the screen on my sliding kitchen door Sunday night. Trying to find a place to stay warm these crisp nights. It won’t be my kitchen.

The Block Party is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 14th, at 4PM, in the central Commons. Maybe we’re really going to have one! Meet your neighbors, come one, come all! And please bring something to share. Food, glad spirits, or both! Anyone have a folding table? Brenda Sharek, 1990 on the Court, at 715-0337 is coordinating. Rain date: the 15th, same time, same place.

Thanks to the drivers coming out of the Court for their renewed watchfulness before turning onto Solaridge Drive. And a request to drivers on the Drive to observe reasonable speeds.

Have you noticed how dry it’s been? We’ll soon have cactus moving into our yards. The trees and shrubs are in jeopardy of going into the winter with a big water deficit, and that means winter loss could be heavy. We’ve all spent considerable money and effort to bring our cluster landscaping up to its current level.

Now we need to water, until we get a long, four day soaking rain. Please drag a hose to the nearest plantings (Leyland Cypress, Austrian and Japanese Pine, Black Gum, Allegheny Viburnum, Witchhazel) and give them a good long soaking down to the deepest roots? I’ve soaked the first ten Cypress along the Villa Ridge border already, with 150 gallons on each. If you don’t have a hose or outdoor faucet, how about buckets?! Thanks from the trees!

The Board has asked the trash company to avoid driving down the pipestem near 11021,3,5 in order to reduce heavy traffic on the pavement there. A neighbor showed us considerable pavement damage on the pipestem. Rainbow has supplied big blue carriers for those people to bring their trash up to the Drive. Thanks for your efforts, everyone!

When you recycle items through Rainbow, be aware that they now also take Plastic 1 and Plastic 2 (plastic milk, juice, soda, water), even though it’s not required by County rules. That’s in addition to a) aluminum, steel and tin cans, b) all colors of glass, and c) newspaper. Just keep the items in separate paper bags, please.

Do you want locked central mailboxes similar to those in Villa Ridge? I’ve mentioned this in the past when we experienced vandalism. A Solar resident’s new checks were pilfered from the box recently, and the villain tried to pass one over at South Lakes Center! Needless to say, keep your eyes on your mailbox.

Parking enforcement continues. Please don’t park along the Drive in the neighborhood of 11016 to 11020, no use tempting fate. The towing company has been patrolling, but so far they haven’t towed anyone. Not even me.

With autumn approaching and days shortening, it’s time to remember our pole lights. These friendly, twinkling sentinels bathe the Cluster in a warm welcoming glow every evening. And probably scare away the big bad wolves.

These lights are a really nice design element of Solaridge, and they’re remarkably effective, if used. Check yours out, replace the burned-out bulbs, and give me a call at 620-0159 if you’d like assistance locating an automatic eye sensor to light it every evening. (I have one of these but it’s not too effective, because of the dense ornamental grasses shading it from the skylight.)

Jack Kellogg says to watch for termites -- he’s had an exterminator visit. Seems that the 10 year barrier placed by the builder is about gone.

The Board meets second Wednesdays at 7:30 at my place, 11020, and everyone’s welcome as always.
