Solar Wind!

What a wind that was yesterday! It shook my chimney stacks until I was sure they would be down at the foot of the hill by morning. I guess it wasn’t really Solar, though. Perhaps, Arctic.

Announcement: Our Annual Meeting will be 7:30 PM, Wednesday, April 23 in Meeting Room 1 at the Reston Regional Library. Be sure to mark it on your calendars now!

The board is looking carefully at the next stage of asphalt repairs -- a full surface course -- which needs to be applied to our streets in a couple of years. This basically seals the cut-and-patch work we did last year, and is recommended by the asphalt contractors we’ve interviewed and by the engineering firm which advised us on the work.

Because of this upcoming major expense, we have increased the reserve funding. And because of those increased funds flowing into reserves, we have increased the assessment by $10 a quarter. This is only the second increase in a number of years, but we did it very reluctantly. Come to the annual meeting April 23 and learn the details!

At a recent RA meeting on cluster finances, I learned that many clusters have an audit committee which is responsible for reviewing the cluster books at the end of each year. While we’re a small cluster with relatively simple accounts, I think it’s a good idea. Anyone interested in serving?

What do you want to do about mailboxes? Earlier I mentioned the possibility of making it a cluster project to replace them all with new posts and boxes. Consistency is attractive -- at least in mailboxes. Meanwhile, the Postal Service has proposed that we convert to modular locked boxes, like those we see next door in Villa Ridge. Better security, but I’m not sure of the esthetics. Be prepared to discuss your mailbox on the 23rd of April!

Please keep our woods clean! If you see debris in the woods, carry it home. Take a trash bag on a walk and see how much you can find to fill it. Above all, don’t pile old sod, cut branches, leaves, dirt, empty plastic buckets or unused firewood in our (beautiful but small) woods. Thank you.

A neighbor asks that everyone curb their dogs -- judging by the number of brown spots on his lawn, it’s a reasonable request. Other neighbors would like to know who put the rusty tailpipe on their front porch Sunday night and rang the bell... Sounds odd to me. These folks are relatively new in Solaridge, what a bizarre welcome for them!

Time for a reminder about solar attics. A few years ago a realtor remarked that Solaridge had a "trashy" reputation and lower property values because of the unsightly solar attics on display. And we all made a major effort to clean them up. Take a stroll this weekend, and look at your attic from 50 yards away. Is it still neat and clean? Are your miniblinds still looking good? Is your wallboard or kraft paper up there still attractive?

Last, remember to clean your gutters periodically. This is important to keep runoff away from your house. If your downspouts are diverted to the street as part of the cluster drainage project, this is especially important!

Gosh, was this the annual Nag Issue, or what! The good news is that it’s Spring! See you April 23rd!
